Jacqueline ParedesGame Design TeacherMs. Paredes has long been involved in the world of education and STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math). While a geophysics undergraduate at UC Santa Barbara, she coordinated an annual on-campus event for youth of color, called Science & Technology Day (pulling in almost 1,000 attendees every year) and worked at a community center called La Casa de la Raza in which she was an instructor for a program called Huehuetlatolli, combining STEM and mesoamerican culture. Since graduating from UCSB, Ms. Paredes has excitedly continued her work alongside youth under different capacities and is now on her second year of teaching. She is currently a teacher at Augustus Hawkins High School and teaches Computer Programming and Game Design for tenth and eleventh graders. As a teacher, Ms. Paredes is heavily inspired and guided by social justice theories such as Critical Race Theory, Latina/o Critical Theory, Feminist Epistemology, and Racist Nativism. She is a huge advocate of youth and promoting their access to education and validating schooling experiences. She looks forward to becoming the best teacher she can be.
